William Damon

Life Stories in the Formation of Purpose, Gratitude, and Positive Identity

William Damon is a professor at Stanford University. He is one of the world's leading researchers on the development of purpose and author of The Path to Purpose. Damon's other books include The Moral Child; Greater Expectations (winner of the Parent's Choice Book Award); Some Do Care (with Anne Colby); and Good Work (with Howard Gardner and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi). His most recent book is A Round of Golf with my Father: The New Psychology of Exploring your Past to Make Peace with your Present. The book describes Damon's discovery of what happened to his father after he did not return home to Damon and his mother. In the book, Damon discusses the benefits of unravelling family secrets, coming to terms with past regrets, and renewing identity in a forward-looking and purposeful manner. For this task, Damon employed a "life review," a method of systematically examining one's past to build positive narrative identity. The book concludes with an imaginary round of golf between Damon and his deceased father, an experience that Damon found satisfying and redemptive. Damon has been elected to membership in the National Academy of Education and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
